After attending the 2009 Bathurst 1000 I was curious to look at how the safety car influenced race positions after seeing Besnard and Ritter lose their lead as a result of the safety car on lap 141.

The chart uses an implemention of the flot Javascript plotting library for jQuery. The chart only works in modern browsers that support the HTML Canvas element (no IE).

While ranking data was easy to come by, data for the safety car laps proved difficult - the display safety car effected laps (in yellow) are therefore a best estimate compiled from various media reports and lap times.

My conclusion? The safety car can have a drastic impact on specific cars, but wet weather and the associated pit stops to change to (e.g. lap 181) from (e.g. lap 6^*) wet weather tires appears to have a much great influence on the broader field.
